Velia Newman
Well loved for her expressive strokes, thick impasto palette and celebratory use of colour Velia began painting at nine years of age under her mother’s guidance. Her mother Anita Newman is a well-known as a romantic impressionist.
Velia’s painting is still influenced today by a childhood spent in the surf of the vibrant Northern Sydney Beaches. Her bold, highly animated style projects an irresistible, childlike positivity. She is now recognized as one of Australia’s foremost contemporary female artists, and has exhibited alongside Archibald winner Geoff Dyer and the legendary David Boyd. In the last decade Velia’s work has created enormous impact on both the domestic and international stage. Her work features in some of the world’s most prestigious private collections and can be viewed in galleries through Asia, the States and the United Kingdom.
